Our client is a young woman with lots of pets, and an interest in design, photography and history. We decided together to give the soulless existing home a "history" in which different portions of the house seem to have been completed at different times. The in-fill entry addition is presented as the point of origin. A simple rectangular barn-like volume with a gable roof and reclaimed heavy timber interior structure, the entry mass is sheathed in reclaimed redwood board and batten barn siding. The kitchen block of the existing house is sheathed in re-used limestone fieldstone and heavy timber lintels, presented as a later addition. The remainder of the house is sheathed with 3" lap siding, presented as the final building phase.
